Design Competition

We have been a pioneer in Finnish design since 1928. In the honor of the 90-year-old Isku, we are organizing the Isku 90 Design Competition to celebrate Isku’s history and position as Finland’s leading furniture company.

The competition prize pool is 24,000 euros.

Uno tuotteet on suunniteltu aktiivisille käyttäjille julkisiin tiloihin. Jakkaran pallon muotoinen pohja mahdollistaa kevyen keinumisen ja aktivoi istuma-asentoa. Pöydän latauspiste helpottaa kiireisen mobiilikäyttäjän arkea.

Uno products are designed for active users in public spaces. The ball-shaped bottom of the socket allows light rocking and activates the seating position. The desk has a charging point that facilitates the busy life of a mobile user.

Seed (design Simo Serpola) []
Monitila‐ ja oppimisympäristöihin soveltuva pyöreä tilanjakaja, jota voidaan varioida eri esityspinnoin esimerkiksi tussitaululla. Tilaa jakava akustinen elementti mahdollistaa erilaiset työskentely‐ ja ryhmätyötilanteet.

Product is a circular space divider suitable for activity-based offices and learning environments, which can be varied on different presentation surfaces, for example with a whiteboard. Space-sharing acoustic element allows different work and team work situations.

Pick on minimalistinen kalustesarja, joka koostuu vaaterekistä, pystynaulakosta ja seinänaulakosta. Yhtenäinen muotokieli ja innovatiivinen rakenne tuovat sarjalle omaleimaisen ilmeen. Sarjan jokainen tuote toimii myös itsekseen.

Pick is a minimalist set of furniture, consisting of a wardrobe rack, a vertical coat rack and a wall rack. Solid design language and innovative design give the series a distinctive look. Every product in the series works by itself.

Grip (design Antti Keskinen)
Kalustesarjassa yhdistyy mukava ja turvallinen istuin sekä tukikaide. Tarkoitettu hoito- ja senioriympäristöihin sekä vanhenevan väestön koteihin. Kalustesarjan ajatuksena on kannustaa istumisen lisäksi liikkumaan ja seisomaan.

The furniture series combines a comfortable and secure seat with a support rail. Intended for care and senior environments, as well as for homes of the aging population. The idea of furniture series is to encourage to move and stand in addition to sitting.
Light (design Timo Ripatti)
Light on visuaalisesti, mitoituksellisesti sekä rakenteellisesti kevyt ja kaunis neuvottelutuoli. Sen käsinojissa on litteä teräsprofiili sekä avonaiset sivupaneelit, jotka luovat tuoliin persoonallisen ilmeen.

Light is visually, dimensionally, and structurally light and beautiful negotiation chair. Its armrests have a flat steel profile as well as open side panels that create a personalized look on the chair.

Isku Patient Cabinet (design Sid Kumpurinne)
Liikuteltava potilaskaappi, joka tarjoaa sinulle omaa tilaa julkisessa ympäristössä. Voit ladata elektroniikka laitteesi suoraan kaapin kyljestä ja kääntämällä kaappia saat itsellesi yksityisyyttä sekä työtason.

A movable patient cabinet that provides your own space in a public environment. You can charge your devices directly from the cabinet and by turning the cabinet you get yourself privacy as well as the worktop.

Finalists

Six excellent works were selected for the finals. Following people are behind them.

Petteri Häkkinen

Petteri Häkkinen has graduated from Lahti Institute of Design in 2012. Häkkinen’s own studio Studio Haekkinen is located in Helsinki. In his design, Häkkinen emphasizes usability, manufacturability and durability.

Antti Keskinen

Antti Keskinen is aa architect and designer from Helsinki. He graduated as a furniture designer from the Lahti Institute of Design and as an architect from Tampere University of Technology. He is happy to work extensively on different scales of architecture and design and is interested in creating solutions for users with special needs.

Sid Kumpurinne

Sid Kumpurinne is a designer who thrives at the extremity of products and services because he believes that new innovations can be found there. He loves conceptualization because, as he succeeds, it inspires and enables the wild idea to become a better product.

Timo Ripatti

Designer Timo Ripatti is an architect and furniture designer. He works extensively in design and his work varies from lighting to furniture design and exhibition design in both Finland and abroad. Currently, Timo leads his design office STUDIO RIPATTI in Helsinki.

Simo Serpola

Simo Serpola is a designer who focuses on lighting, product and space planning. The design work is inspired by the art, science and technology. His work has been recognized nationally and internationally.

Laura Väre

Laura Väre is a Helsinki-based designer who completes her master’s degree in the field of furniture design at Aalto University. She draws ideas on everyday matters and insights. Laura wants to create beautiful, practical and timeless products for today’s challenges in her own minimalist style.

Isku 90 Design Competition

The competition seeks innovative new solutions in four different categories: Work, Home, Learning and Care Environments. In order to succeed in the competition, entries must show excellent product design skills. The assessment will emphasise the usability of the products, taking into account various user groups.

The competition prize pool is worth € 24 000.

Isku 90 Design Competition received 127 awesome entries. After careful consideration we are proud to announce that – instead of five – we have selected six (6) contestants for the second stage. Huge thank you to all the designers and congratulations to the finalists.

Competition program briefly

Common things

  • The Isku 90 design competition is organised by Isku, Finland’s largest industrial operator in the furniture industry.
  • The goal of the competition is to discover product families suited for industrial manufacturing and sales in four different categories: Work, Home, Learning and Care Environments.
  • The competition is a two-stage product design competition.
  • Read whole competition program here.

1st stage

  • 3 November, 12:00 noon: deadline for entries in the first stage
  • 17 November: the pseudonyms of the five (5) contestants selected for the second stage will be published on the competition website at www.isku90.fi and in Ornamo’s bulletins.

2nd stage

  • At the second stage of the competition, the finalists will create/commission models of their entries.
  • The finalists will have access to Isku’s Design Lab and its materials.
  • Each finalist will also receive a sum of €1,000 (one thousand euros) to support the creation of the model.
  • The winners will be notified in person by 19 February 2018.

Can a designer / group of designers send more than one entry?

You may send multiple entries for this competition. If you send more than one entries, please make sure to send a separate e-mail for each entry (one e-mail per product/product family).

Is the idea to design product families or individual products?

You may propose both, product families or individual products.

Am I allowed to propose a product that is trade dressed before the competition was announced? My design has been shown in an exhibition before. Can i propose this product in this competition?

In these cases, please express this clearly in your entry.

Do I have to indicate the category in my entry? My entry fits multiple categories.

You may indicate all the categories that you think your design fits.

I would like to know if participants from outside of Finland are eligible to join design competition?

Participants from outside of Finland are more than welcome to enter the competition.
